Surviving a storm

When it comes to severe storms, preparation is the key. There are some simple things you can do during and after a storm to protect your family and home, as follows:

During a storm

  • Activate your Home Emergency Plan and get your Home Emergency Kit ready.
  • Stay inside and well clear of windows, doors and skylights
  • Shelter in the safest part of your house (internal room, hallway, built-in wardrobe or cellar)
  • Avoid using electrical appliances
  • If outdoors, seek immediate shelter in a solid, enclosed space
  • If driving, turn on your hazard lights and pull over away from trees, power lines, drains and waterways
  • Stay tuned to the radio or other media for warnings, updates and advice

After a storm

  • Listen to the radio or other media for updates and advice
  • Check your house and property for damage
  • Stay clear of fallen power lines, trees, damaged buildings and waterways
  • Check on your neighbours to see if they need help
  • Do not go sightseeing
